Fiji’s Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka, addressed the recent alarming incident that resulted in seven women being hospitalized after consuming a cocktail at the Warwick Fiji resort. In a press conference, he expressed sympathy for the affected guests and assured their families that the best medical care is being provided. The Minister confirmed that, as of this morning, the patients’ conditions have stabilized, and he is hopeful they will continue to improve.
Gavoka emphasized that the incident appears to be an isolated one, as no additional cases have been reported. The health team has initiated an investigation into the cause of the illness, with assistance from the Fiji Police Force and the Ministry of Health. He reassured the public that the resort, a well-established destination popular with Australian tourists, has consistently maintained a strong reputation over the years.
“This is a very specific occurrence involving just seven individuals at a singular bar,” he stated, reinforcing that there have been no similar incidents reported at the resort or throughout Fiji.
As tourists flock to Fiji, Gavoka urged both local and international visitors to remain confident in the safety of their experience in the country, noting that close to a million tourists visit annually without issue. He acknowledged potential concerns but reiterated that the tourism sector is generally safe.
Looking ahead, he counseled tourists to exercise caution regarding what they consume, especially as the festive season approaches. Meanwhile, an updated travel advisory for Australian tourists continues to recommend exercising normal safety precautions and remaining vigilant against potential risks such as drink spiking and methanol poisoning.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures and proper care in the tourism industry. The prompt response to the situation highlights the commitment of Fijian authorities to ensure the well-being of both locals and visitors, fostering a hopeful outlook for maintaining Fiji’s reputation as a safe travel destination.
