Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed that the trust and cooperation that characterized the coalition government before December 24, 2022, has been disrupted. This statement follows criticism from Viliame Takayawa, the General Secretary of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), regarding the government’s recent delegation to Tonga. While Takayawa has issued an apology, Rabuka has indicated that ongoing caution and scrutiny will now guide their interactions.

Rabuka reasserted the importance of maintaining the coalition, urging its members to prioritize the interests of Fijians and work collaboratively on the upcoming budgets. He stated that any subsequent derogatory remarks from Takayawa would be treated with increased seriousness, stressing the need for cooperation and unity among coalition members.

Amid these tensions, Rabuka has taken steps to stabilize the coalition, affirming that he will not unilaterally abandon the coalition agreement without his party’s consensus. He highlighted the coalition’s foundation in collective agreement and expressed a determination to foster unity, especially as Fiji prepares to observe significant public holidays such as Girmit Day and Ratu Sukuna Day.

Emphasizing reconciliation, Rabuka referred to Takayawa’s apology as a crucial step in moving forward together as a government. He underscored the necessity for Fijians to focus on unifying elements rather than divisions, particularly in light of the country’s history of political turmoil.

This situation presents an opportunity for healing within the coalition, with the potential for constructive dialogues to address grievances and reinforce collaboration. As the nation commemorates its past and looks towards the future, there is hope that these challenges can lead to stronger governance and a more cohesive society in Fiji. By prioritizing unity and communication, the government aims to bridge divides and serve the collective interests of its citizens.
