The Coalition Government of Fiji is in the process of designing its first national digital plan, with a key element of it being the establishment of e-government in order to match strides with the private sector. In a statement made by Manoa Kamikamica, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Small and Medium Enterprises and Communications, it was noted that automating governmental processes can rectify productivity-related issues and increase transparency and accountability.
Furthermore, he explained that automation can prevent scenarios like misplacing files or files being held in different departments. Two automation projects are currently being worked on, the first being a fully automated system for starting a business, which will be completed soon. This will enable prospective business owners to submit their applications online. The second project is focused on automating the construction permit process which is scheduled for the coming year.
According to Mr. Kamikamica, these implementations will eliminate manual submission and tracking of documents across various departments, reduce approval times and transform the delivery of services countrywide. While acknowledging the fact that the digital strategy will come with a hefty price tag for taxpayers and the government, he also emphasized that it must be seen an investment in the future of Fiji’s economy.
