Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has indicated he may terminate the coalition agreement with the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), caused by dissatisfaction with the party’s leadership. In a recent interview with FBC News, Rabuka expressed his frustration towards SODELPA’s general secretary, Viliame Takayawa, and leader, Aseri Radrodro, following critical remarks made about the Fijian government’s trade mission to Tonga.

Rabuka is currently reevaluating the coalition arrangement among the three political parties, stating, “I am right now looking at whether I should continue to abide by the agreement.” He emphasized that it is incumbent upon SODELPA to rectify their issues to remain in the coalition, insisting that “It is up to them to get their act in order and give me a reason not to put them away from the coalition agreement.”

The Prime Minister noted that there had been numerous complaints against Radrodro, particularly regarding certain appointments within the Ministry of Education. He is taking these complaints seriously as the minister responsible for the civil service, having asked the civil service chair to investigate the concerns raised by civil servants.

Notably, while facing potential instability within the coalition, Rabuka has gained new support from nine independent candidates. This shift may substantially influence the balance of power in Fiji’s political landscape. Previous articles have highlighted a sense of resilience among coalition leaders, emphasizing the importance of unity and collaboration to tackle significant challenges.

This ongoing political situation presents an opportunity for reform and collaborative governance that could lead to improved trust and transparency among coalition partners moving forward. As Fiji navigates these changes, fostering effective communication may result in more robust governance that ultimately benefits the Fijian people.
