Rob Sherman, head coach of Fiji’s national football team, the Bula Boys, has expressed a desire to remain in Fiji and continue mentoring the team despite their recent 7-0 defeat against New Zealand in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Following the match in Wellington, Sherman stated, “I’d like to stay on and it’s all about helping the region and Fiji grow,” highlighting his commitment to develop football in Fiji.
While Sherman is eager to continue his role, he acknowledged that the final decision regarding his future lies with the Fiji Football Association. “If they are keen for me to do that (stay), then it’s fine; if not, then it’s their decision,” he clarified.
In discussing the match against New Zealand, Sherman recognized that his players gave their all, stating, “The players gave their 100 per cent, and this cannot be denied.” He noted the challenges posed by New Zealand’s professional team, particularly the fitness and intensity levels that his squad struggled to match. Sherman articulated that the early goals scored by New Zealand shifted momentum significantly, making it difficult for Fiji to respond.
Fiji’s forward Christopher Wasasala nearly scored a goal that would have been a recognizing breakthrough but hit the post. “It’s disappointing that we could not get that goal. It would have been a good goal from a break, something we had been working on,” Sherman reflected on the missed opportunity.
As the Bula Boys look forward, they can view this defeat as a valuable learning experience. Reflecting on their aspirations, Sherman previously expressed optimism about the potential for further development in Fijian football. The experiences garnered through matches such as this can lay the groundwork for future successes, fostering a spirit of resilience and commitment within the team.
Looking ahead, Sherman’s continued involvement could prove pivotal as the Bula Boys aim for future competitions. Fans remain hopeful, rallying behind their team as they seek to build on this experience and strive for a more favorable outcome in upcoming tournaments. This collective aspiration represents a brighter future for Fijian football, with ambitions of achieving unprecedented milestones on the international stage.
