Fiji’s Coach Explores Squad Depth Ahead of PNC Clash

Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is experimenting with all possible combinations in his 28-player squad during the Pacific Nations Cup (PNC). In a recent interview, Byrne pointed out that the interactions between forwards and backs are consistently improving.

“It’s a small squad; 28 is not a large number,” he stated. “We have our backs sorted out and probably one or two extra backs, allowing them to be included in various combinations without the need to hold back any players.”

Byrne mentioned that while he is unsure about the final combinations as the tournament progresses, the team is currently in a phase of experimentation. “We’re working through it, and everyone is getting an opportunity. It’s not like we have four or five players sitting on the sidelines. Everyone is being utilized in such a limited squad.”

Byrne is aware of the challenges that lie ahead, particularly in the upcoming match against Tonga next Friday. “Playing Fiji in Fiji, Samoa in Samoa, or Tonga in Tonga all presents a similar environment. We understand the passion of the fans in the Pacific Islands; they truly support their home teams,” he explained.

“It will be a significant test for us, and we must ensure that we remain focused on our objectives, tuning out any distractions. We’re looking forward to it, just as opponents do when they come to face us.”

In other news, Tonga will be captained by prop Ben Tameifuna as they kick off their PNC journey against Samoa in Apia, a crucial match for both sides.
