Fiji’s Coach Experiments with Squad Dynamics Ahead of Tonga Clash

Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is exploring various combinations in his 28-member squad during the Pacific Nations Cup (PNC) tournament. In an interview, Byrne noted that the interactions between the forwards and backs are consistently improving.

“It’s a small squad; 28 is not a large number,” he remarked. “We have our backs, and we may have one or two additional players, which allows them to experiment with different combinations without overextending the group.”

Byrne mentioned that the exact combinations they will adopt as the competition progresses remain uncertain, but emphasized that the team is actively developing. “We’re progressing through this process, and everyone is getting a chance. There are no players sitting out; everyone is participating given the size of the squad,” he explained.

Looking ahead to the challenge against Tonga next Friday, Byrne expressed his awareness of the spirited environment they will face. “It’s akin to playing Fiji in Fiji, Samoa in Samoa, or Tonga in Tonga. The fans in the Pacific Islands are passionate about their home teams,” he said. “We expect a high level of pressure, and we must ensure that we stay focused on our objectives, allowing any distractions to fade away. We are eager for this challenge, just as other teams are when they come to face us.”

In related news, burly prop Ben Tameifuna will lead Tonga in their PNC opener against Samoa in Apia, a crucial match for both sides.
