Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is exploring various combinations within his 28-member squad during the Pacific Nations Cup (PNC) competition. In a recent interview, Byrne noted that the interactions between the forwards and backs are consistently improving.
“It’s a small squad, and 28 isn’t a lot of players,” he stated. “We have our backs, and with one or two extra backs available, they are getting opportunities in different combinations.”
Byrne expressed uncertainty regarding the team’s combinations as the competition progresses, emphasizing that they are still refining their approach. “We are working through that, and everyone is getting a chance. No one is sitting on the sidelines unused,” he remarked.
As the Flying Fijians prepare for their upcoming challenge against Tonga next Friday, Byrne recognizes the unique pressures of playing away. “It’s akin to playing Fiji in Fiji, Samoa in Samoa, or Tonga in Tonga. We understand the enthusiasm of the fans in the Pacific Islands; they are fiercely supportive of their home teams,” he said.
Byrne added, “This will provide us with a beneficial pressure, and we must ensure we remain focused on our goals while tuning out distractions.”
In other news, burly prop Ben Tameifuna is set to captain Tonga in their PNC opener against Samoa in Apia, which is crucial for both teams.
