Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is experimenting with various lineups from his 28-member squad during the Pacific Nations Cup (PNC). In an interview with SUNsports, Byrne noted that the interactions between the forwards and backs are consistently improving.
“It’s a small squad, 28 players isn’t a lot,” he mentioned. “We have our backs and probably one or two additional backs, which allows them to be tested across different combinations without overextending.”
Byrne confessed that he is unsure what the final combinations will look like as the tournament progresses, emphasizing that it remains a developmental process. “We’re just sorting through that, and everyone is getting an opportunity. It’s not as if we have four or five players on the sidelines not in use. Everyone is getting involved given the small squad size.”
As for the upcoming match against Tonga, scheduled for next Friday, Byrne is aware of the challenges ahead. “Competing in Fiji, Samoa, or Tonga each presents its own unique environment. We understand how passionate the fans are in the Pacific Islands; they passionately support their home teams,” he said. “This will put us under pressure, but we need to remain focused on our objectives, ignoring any external distractions. We are eager for this experience, just as other teams feel when they come to play against us.”
In the meantime, Tonga will be led by powerful prop Ben Tameifuna in their PNC opener against Samoa in Apia, a crucial match for both sides.
