Opposition MP Praveen Bala has highlighted Fiji’s noteworthy accomplishments in climate action during the tenure of the previous FijiFirst Government, emphasizing that these efforts earned the nation significant global acclaim. In response to Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad’s defense of a substantial 56-member delegation sent to Baku, Azerbaijan, Bala pointed out that Fiji’s proactive climate initiatives have positioned it as a leader in international climate advocacy. He underscored the significance of Fiji’s role in presiding over the 2017 COP 23 conference in Bonn, reflecting the country’s commitment to substantial climate action rather than mere rhetoric.
Bala criticized the current government for the size of the Baku delegation, arguing that several members could provide valuable contributions to Fiji’s climate resilience directly from within the country, rather than participating in what he termed an extravagant overseas trip. He expressed concern that such a large delegation could negatively affect public services and productivity, particularly as Fijians face rising living costs and pressing economic challenges.
Bala concluded by stressing the need for transparency from the government, especially regarding the financial strains on the populace. This discourse serves as a reminder of the importance of aligning national representation with both immediate domestic needs and global responsibilities in climate action.
This dialogue also emphasizes the critical balance between international climate engagement and addressing local economic issues—the hope is that the government will take heed of these concerns and strive for a more sustainable and inclusive approach to governance.
