Fiji’s Climate Fight: Small Islands Seek Big Changes

Small Island Developing States (SIDs), including Fiji, encounter distinct challenges in addressing the impacts of climate change, even though they contribute less than 1 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. This remark was made by Viliame Gavoka, Fiji’s Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, during the 3rd Voice of the Global South Summit, which was livestreamed from the CAAF conference room in Namaka, Nadi, last Friday.

The summit highlighted Fiji’s commitment to addressing critical issues faced by the Global South. Mr. Gavoka expressed appreciation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for organizing the summit and for India’s proactive approach in elevating the voices of the Global South internationally.

“The Global South is no longer a passive participant on the world stage,” Mr. Gavoka stated. “We are actively reshaping our narrative to reflect our mutual aspirations for an equitable global order. The theme of this summit — An Empowered Global South for a Sustainable Future — strongly aligns with our collective goal of addressing the challenges we face today.”

He defined the Global South as comprising countries often referred to as developing, less developed, or underdeveloped, many of which are located in the Southern Hemisphere, primarily in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Mr. Gavoka noted India’s recognition as a prominent advocate for these nations within the Global South.

He emphasized the importance of international partnerships and platforms, such as the International Solar Alliance and the Global Biofuel Alliance, in promoting effective energy transitions and sustainable development in the Global South.
