Fiji’s Climate Crisis: Are Lives at Risk?

The Fiji Council of Social Services has raised concerns about the increasing risk to lives in Fiji due to natural disasters and climate change. During a panel discussion at COP, executive director Vani Catanasiga emphasized that the country’s informal settlements, which are increasingly populated by individuals displaced by climate change, are the most affected communities facing these impacts.

Catanasiga pointed out the lack of political urgency regarding the vulnerabilities of residents in informal settlements. Many representatives, often from these communities themselves, may not fully grasp the urgency of the situation. She highlighted broader issues within governance and questioned the effectiveness of the electoral system in addressing these pressing challenges.

Despite the high risks associated with informal settlements, Catanasiga noted that little attention is given to these issues in decision-making processes. The influx of residents into these areas has further exacerbated vulnerabilities, leaving many without adequate support from government initiatives aimed at disaster preparedness.

She stressed the importance of preventing loss of life, emphasizing that fatalities should be treated as a serious concern rather than a secondary priority. Catanasiga urged the government to focus on enhancing climate resilience at home, rather than primarily engaging in global forums like COP.

In conclusion, addressing local governance and urgent community issues should be the cornerstone of Fiji’s climate action strategy.

This call to action highlights that while Fiji faces grave challenges, it also has the opportunity to strengthen its systems and protect its most vulnerable populations. In doing so, the nation could set a precedent for proactive climate resilience measures that could serve as a model for other countries facing similar challenges.
