Savenaca Narube, leader of Unity Fiji, recently stirred controversy with his remarks suggesting that Australia should rethink its budget support to Fiji. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, strongly rebuffed these claims, labeling them as baseless and harmful to Fiji’s economic stability, particularly in regard to the government’s handling of Australian aid.

Speaking at the Climate Integrity Conference 2025 in Canberra, Narube criticized Fiji’s representation at international climate discussions, expressing concern about the size of its delegation to COP29. He argued that Australia must maintain credibility with the Pacific nations by allowing scrutiny of its aid arrangements, a point that prompted a swift response from Prasad.

In his rebuttal, Prasad clarified that the true size of Fiji’s delegation was 56, contrasting Narube’s assertion of 100. He further noted that a significant majority—91 percent—of the $1.2 million delegation cost was funded by external sources, not solely by the Fijian government or Australia. Prasad pointed out that various donors and agencies were responsible for this support.

Expressing disappointment over Narube’s remarks, Prasad highlighted the accountability measures in place within budget support frameworks, suggesting that Narube’s comments could overlook the established protocols for financial oversight.

This exchange between Narube and Prasad reflects deeper political tensions in Fiji concerning governance and resource distribution, particularly in light of critical climate discussions. As Fiji continues to assert its role in international climate negotiations, there is a strong opportunity for constructive dialogue that could enhance transparency and improve the effectiveness of funding initiatives.

Moreover, engaging with local communities and being responsive to critiques could bolster Fiji’s stance in global climate advocacy, ensuring that international support is aligned with the genuine needs of those affected by climate change. This ongoing discourse emphasizes the importance of collaborative approaches in addressing pressing environmental issues, paving the way for positive governance reform that prioritizes vulnerable populations during the climate crisis.
