Fiji’s film industry is on the rise as it prepares for the historic screening of its first feature film at the New Zealand International Film Festival. The film “BATI,” an 83-minute boxing drama, will premiere at the Hollywood Avondale cinema in Auckland in early August.
Written and directed by Andrew John Fakaua Ponton, “BATI” tells the inspiring story of Sam, a young security guard aspiring to be a professional boxer to support his family. Set in the vibrant locales of Suva and Namosi, the film reflects key themes of perseverance and identity that resonate deeply within Fijian culture. Ponton expressed his gratitude for collaborating with local talent, stating, “I am grateful to have worked with so many talented people on this project.”
Starring rising local actors James Rabuatoka and Jedidiah Tuinasavusavu, “BATI” has garnered international attention. It was recently named among the 17 must-see films at the festival by The Post. The film also features a soundtrack complete with contributions from beloved local artists such as InsideOut, Sailasa Tora, Matanibola, and the Viwalu Family Gospel.
After its premiere in New Zealand, “BATI” is slated to screen in Wellington and Christchurch, followed by theatrical releases in Fiji, Samoa, and Papua New Guinea later that month.
This film exemplifies the growing recognition of Fiji’s film industry on the global stage. With the increasing interest in diverse storytelling from smaller nations, “BATI” symbolizes the potential for broader appreciation of regional narratives. The film industry in Fiji is crucial not only for economic growth—contributing around $255 million to the economy in the previous financial year—but also for inspiring local talent and creativity.
It’s a moment of pride for Fiji, as local filmmakers, driven by passion and dedication, continue to pave new paths for storytelling and representation in cinema. The future looks promising for the Fijian film industry, with hope that it will flourish and inspire more local talents in the years to come.
