Opposition MP Penioni Ravunawa has highlighted a serious crisis in Fiji, as statistics reveal that 68 percent of child abuse cases involve neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse. In his discussion with FijiLive, Ravunawa, who serves as the Shadow Minister for Health and holds a leadership role in the Church, expressed his disgust and concern regarding the evident societal decline.

The Child Welfare Act National Database reported a total of 1,477 cases of abuse in 2023. Alarmingly, 68 percent of these cases involved some form of neglect, physical abuse, or sexual abuse, with 73 percent of the perpetrators being known to the victims. Notably, half of these perpetrators are immediate family members.

Ravunawa emphasized the urgent need for action by stating, “We need to stop being spectators to this horrifying reality. It is time we raise our voices.” He endorsed the Ministry of Women and Children’s call to advocate for children’s rights and promote child protection initiatives.

On this World Children’s Day, which also focuses on the prevention of child abuse and neglect, Ravunawa urged everyone to not only observe the day but to embody its significance in their daily lives. He reminded the public that children are the future of Fiji and their safety is a collective responsibility.

This situation sheds light on an urgent need for community involvement and awareness. It calls for a united effort from all sectors of society to prioritize the protection of children, ensuring they are raised in safe and nurturing environments. The discussions ignited by leaders like Ravunawa can serve as a catalyst for change, encouraging more initiatives aimed at safeguarding the well-being of future generations.

By raising awareness, educating families, and promoting community programs, Fiji can work towards a future where all children live free from abuse, ensuring they have the opportunity to thrive.
