Opposition MP Penioni Ravunawa has expressed deep concern over the alarming statistics revealing that 68 percent of reported child abuse cases in Fiji are linked to neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse. He emphasized that the nation is currently facing a crisis, as stated during an interview with FijiLive.
As Shadow Minister for Health and a community leader, Ravunawa highlighted the societal decline reflected in the statistics from the Child Welfare Act National Database, which indicated that 1,477 child abuse cases were reported in 2023. Disturbingly, 73 percent of these cases involve perpetrators who are familiar to the victims, with half of them being immediate family members.
Ravunawa stressed the urgent need for action, urging society to stop remaining passive in the face of such a harrowing reality. He called on the Ministry of Women and Children to enhance advocacy efforts regarding children’s rights and to prioritize child protection.
In light of World Children’s Day and the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, Ravunawa encouraged everyone to commit to promoting children’s safety and well-being every day. He poignantly stated that children represent the future of Fiji and that their protection is a shared responsibility.
This situation, while distressing, offers an opportunity for communities to unite in support of child welfare initiatives. With increased awareness and action, there is hope that positive changes can be made to ensure a safer environment for Fiji’s children.
In summary, the article highlights the urgent issue of child abuse in Fiji, as raised by MP Ravunawa, along with a call for collective action to safeguard the nation’s youth.
