Assistant Minister for Justice Ratu Josaia Niudami has praised the recent protest march held by the chiefs and people of Ra, referring to it as a clear indication that democracy is alive and well in Fiji. He dismissed criticisms circulating on social media which suggested the demonstration represented a threat to the rule of law. Instead, Ratu Josaia commended the chiefs for their leadership in guiding their communities to express their views on a significant issue, emphasizing that open dialogue is crucial for the nation’s progress.

Ratu Josaia stated, “A nation cannot move forward without giving voice to all its communities.” He urged critics to recognize the true meaning of democracy and warned that silencing people’s voices would lead only to distrust and animosity. He reaffirmed that the participants in the march exercised their rights legally and responsibly.

Moreover, he conveyed the importance of seeking a peaceful and reasonable approach to constitutional reform, supporting the necessity of the protest while encouraging a commitment to non-violence. He mentioned that the process of constitutional change should arrive at an amicable solution, which reflects the will of the people.

The Ra protest aligns with a growing movement among Fijian chiefs and leaders advocating for the revision of the 2013 Constitution. This aligns with earlier discussions by the Great Council of Chiefs emphasizing the need for reforms to better represent the rights of the iTaukei community and enhance participatory governance. The chiefs’ unified stance signals their commitment to a more inclusive framework, fostering a hopeful trajectory towards meaningful dialogue and reform that prioritizes the voices of all citizens in Fiji.

As Fiji moves forward, the increasing engagement from traditional leaders and communities suggests a promising pathway toward a governance system that reflects the diverse aspirations of the population. Such developments inspire optimism that continuous efforts in enhancing democratic processes can lead to a more equitable future for all Fijians.
