Fiji’s Catholic Church Uses Art to Fight Climate Change

The Catholic Church in Fiji is advocating for enhanced climate action through the integration of music and traditional cultural expressions. Archbishop Peter Loy Chong emphasizes the significant impact that art can have in this context, arguing that it can convey deep emotional messages beyond the capabilities of mere words and conventional communications. He considers the climate crisis to be a moral issue that requires an urgent response.

Archbishop Loy Chong states, “The symbolic communication has the power to communicate more deeply and more to the heart than words, signs, technology.” He believes that community performances, including dance, song, and poetry, are essential for sharing personal stories about climate change and its victims. Alusio Setareki, a resident from Serua, also stressed the importance of ensuring that the voices of those most affected by climate change are brought to the forefront.

This initiative follows a significant public lecture titled “Victims’ Narrative of Climate Change: The Missing Voice,” which highlighted the experiences of communities that contribute little to carbon emissions yet suffer greatly from climate impacts. Similar messages have been echoed by regional leaders, such as Fiji’s Acting Prime Minister, who called for global action to address the climate crisis and protect vulnerable nations.
