Fiji’s caregiving sector is poised for significant growth, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Manoa Kamikamica. He made this statement during the re-launch of the Prestige Skills Training Academy, which offers caregiving courses aimed at preparing Fijians for this expanding field.
Dr. Swartika Nair, the director of the academy, highlighted that the institution seeks to empower Fijians by equipping them with vital caregiving skills. Kamikamica noted that caregiving naturally aligns with Fijian cultural values of caring for the elderly and vulnerable members of society. He emphasized that Fijians possess inherent talent in caregiving, and with proper support, this can evolve into a prominent standalone industry.
“We need to diversify the Fijian economy, and we see the retirement caregiving sector as having substantial potential in Fiji,” Kamikamica stated.
Dr. Nair added that the academy offers accredited Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses through the Fiji Higher Education Commission, ensuring graduates receive national qualifications and professional recognition. Many alumni have already joined the caregiving workforce, with new programs focusing on mental health care and manual handling skills to address various community needs effectively.
The re-launch of the Prestige Skills Training Academy is expected to enhance Fiji’s caregiving landscape and contribute to both domestic and international caregiving markets.
