Fiji’s Cardiac Care Revolution: Local Patient Triumphs with Quadruple Bypass Surgery

A resident of Nausori, Avikash Chand, has become the second person in Fiji to successfully undergo a quadruple graft heart bypass surgery. The procedure was performed at the Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) Hospital in Nadi on February 25 by a highly skilled team led by renowned cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Sanjeev Khulbey, who brings 30 years of experience in the field.

Chand, a 50-year-old photojournalist, expressed his heartfelt gratitude towards the PSH team for their prompt assistance, stating, “Within a week, everything was arranged for my surgery… if it was not for the timely assistance and special discounts offered to me, this surgery would not have been possible.” He had previously suffered a major heart attack in November, making the need for timely surgery paramount.

The surgery occurred during a series of cardiac procedures conducted from February 23 to 28, a testament to the growing capabilities of PSH in providing advanced cardiac care locally. Chand had initially considered traveling abroad for treatment due to his heart issues, but was encouraged by positive reviews of PSH Hospitals which convinced him to seek treatment nearby. He noted, “I could be treated far better here in Nadi at a fraction of the cost and convenience for my family members.”

This achievement follows recent successful cardiac procedures at PSH, including a notable triple graft surgery conducted on January 14, showing the facility’s commitment to expanding its surgical capacity. As noted in previous reports, PSH has emerged as a key health center in Fiji, enhancing local healthcare access and positioning itself as a potential health tourism destination.

Parvish Kumar, PSH’s founder, emphasized their ongoing commitment to offering world-class medical services while ensuring affordability for local residents. This development not only highlights the advancements in medical services within Fiji but also inspires hope for many patients seeking critical treatments closer to home, minimizing the burden of expensive medical travel.

Chand’s successful surgery reinforces the promise of improved healthcare access in Fiji, illuminating a hopeful path forward where high-quality medical care can be achieved locally without significant financial strain.
