Fiji’s Captain Calls for Communication Boost After Thrilling Tonga Match

Tevita Ikanivere, captain of the FIJI Water Flying Fijians, has stressed the importance of improved communication within the team. Following their 50-19 victory over Tonga in the Pacific Nations Cup, Ikanivere acknowledged that lapses in concentration could have had serious consequences.

“Towards the back end of the first half, we dropped off and allowed Tonga back into the game. A powerful team like Tonga will capitalize on any space we give them,” he remarked. Despite going from a 19-point lead to a 19-all tie, Fiji ultimately established a strong lead to secure the win.

Ikanivere also highlighted the team’s preparation leading up to the match, noting, “Last week we focused on our fitness to ensure we could perform well. We had a tough week of training knowing Tonga would be a challenge on their home ground.”

For his standout performance, Ikanivere received the Player of the Match award.
