The Fijian government is set to provide an important update in Parliament regarding the establishment of the cannabis industry, particularly focusing on medicinal cannabis. Opposition Member of Parliament, Rinesh Sharma, has formally submitted a question that will prompt Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, to share the findings of previous consultations and feasibility studies related to this initiative.
Earlier this year, the Cabinet approved a Policy Framework aimed at laying the groundwork for Fiji’s medicinal cannabis sector. To further this effort, a taskforce was created in August 2023 to facilitate national and community consultations, garnering a notable response with 513 submissions collected.
In addition to local engagement, the Fijian government has partnered with Medical Kiwi, a leading New Zealand company renowned for its innovative practices in cultivating and exporting medicinal cannabis and cannabidiol. This collaboration is expected to significantly contribute to the development of a robust and sustainable cannabis industry in Fiji.
This initiative has the potential to create new economic opportunities and improve healthcare options within the country. As Parliament discusses this promising venture, it represents a positive stride toward modernizing industry standards and regulations, which could ultimately benefit both the economy and the well-being of Fijians.
By fostering dialogue and cooperation, Fiji is positioning itself as a forward-thinking player in the global medicinal cannabis market.
