Muniappa Gounder, the general secretary of the Fiji Teachers Union, is calling on school administrations to implement spot checks to combat drug use among students. He stressed the need for vigilance and encouraged parents to actively monitor what their children bring to school.

Gounder’s comments came in response to a recent incident where primary school students were reported to the police for allegedly using marijuana. He emphasized the importance of parents being aware of items their children bring to school and advocated for regular spot checks to ensure thorough scrutiny of students and their possessions. This approach, he believes, would help identify prohibited items and cultivate an understanding among students about the consequences of drug-related behavior.

He expressed worries about the increasing incidents of drug use, highlighting a lack of significant action being taken. Gounder insisted that conducting spot checks is vital in the ongoing battle against drug use in schools. He also called for greater collaboration from local law enforcement to enhance awareness among students, suggesting that police should actively patrol schools to educate children about the dangers associated with drug use.

According to Gounder, drug education should not be confined to a single week but should be an ongoing effort. He underscored the importance of educating children on the harmful effects of drugs, stating that this should be a primary focus for both educational institutions and the wider community.
