Fijians share a collective duty to foster a secure environment for all citizens, particularly women and children, as emphasized by Opposition Whip Jone Usamate during the observance of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. His remarks highlight his party’s ongoing commitment to combat gender violence and the significance of sustained leadership in this vital cause.

Mr. Usamate acknowledged the efforts of Minister Lynda Tabuya, stressing the need for continuity in the fight against gender violence. He referenced a past incident in the previous Parliament where they condemned a member who made disparaging comments regarding gender violence, reinforcing that such attitudes are unacceptable and outlining the responsibility of leaders to uphold this message.

He affirmed Fiji’s dedication to adhering to international standards by highlighting the country’s ratification of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), which underscores Fiji’s legal and ethical obligation to confront gender inequality and violence.

The Opposition leader firmly stated that all women and children deserve to live without fear, enjoying the freedom to move safely and freely, irrespective of their beliefs, religion, or dress. He framed this stance as a matter of fundamental human rights, declaring it a grave injustice to harm or oppress anyone, especially women and children.

Mr. Usamate assured his commitment to advocating for the rights and safety of all individuals in Fijian society, asserting that no one should live in fear.

This strong declaration from political leaders serves as a positive reminder of the collective efforts required to combat gender-based violence and ensure that every citizen in Fiji can exercise their rights freely. As society continues to rally against such injustices, the hope remains that sustained activism will lead to meaningful change in cultural attitudes and behaviors, promoting a safer environment for future generations.
