Fiji’s Call for Vigilance Amidst Myanmar’s Earthquake Tragedy

Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Sitiveni Rabuka has called on Fijians residing in Myanmar and Thailand to remain vigilant and follow safety precautions in light of the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck the region last week. The earthquake resulted in extensive destruction and tragically claimed the lives of over 2,000 people in Myanmar, while at least 20 fatalities were reported in nearby Thailand.

In a statement released on the Fiji Government’s Facebook page, Mr. Rabuka extended heartfelt condolences to the families mourning their losses and offered prayers for the swift recovery of those injured. He emphasized Fiji’s solidarity with the people of both countries during this challenging time.

Rabuka noted that Fiji’s diplomatic missions in the affected areas have confirmed the safety of all Fijians currently in Myanmar and Thailand and are rigorously monitoring the situation in collaboration with local authorities. This commitment to ensuring the safety of its citizens mirrors previous compassionate responses by the Fijian government to natural disasters, such as during the earthquake in Vanuatu.

The international outpouring of support in the wake of the earthquake serves as a powerful testament to the resilience and unity of communities during crises. Such disasters can often lead to strengthened bonds between nations as they come together to provide assistance, highlighting the capacity for hope and recovery through collective action.

This unfortunate event underscores the importance of vigilance and community support in disaster-prone regions and reaffirms Fiji’s dedication to humanitarian aid and regional cooperation. As the recovery efforts continue, it is hopeful to see how nations can unite in mutual support, demonstrating the strength found in solidarity.
