Fiji’s Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua has called on politicians to avoid leveraging ethnicity as a political strategy, particularly with elections approaching next year. He emphasized that political discourse should focus on unity rather than division, declaring that there is no place for discrimination or ethnic politics in Fiji.
In his remarks, Tikoduadua stressed the detrimental effects of using the race card in politics, warning that it fosters division and instability. “I don’t believe in it, and every politician should refrain from it, particularly in a negative sense,” he stated. He further elaborated that respectful engagement across all races is essential for maintaining harmony in society.
The Minister’s sentiments echo discussions that have been posed by several leaders in recent months. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and others have similarly urged Fijians to reject racism and promote inclusivity, emphasizing that respect for each other’s rights is vital in fostering harmony within Fiji’s diverse communities. Rabuka highlighted the significance of a shared identity, wherein all Fijians should prioritize their collective identity over ethnic distinctions.
