The Attorney-General of Fiji, Graham Leung, spoke at a gathering in Nausori to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. He highlighted the importance of unity and the urgent need to combat racial discrimination in Fiji. Leung emphasized that no one should feel alienated in their homeland and urged an end to the notion of “othering,” which can lead to exclusion and unfair treatment of different communities.
Leung reflected on Fiji’s past challenges, particularly concerning racial tensions, and stressed that the country must not succumb to divisions that cause suffering, as seen in global conflicts. He called for acknowledgment of mutual equality, highlighting that recognizing each other’s humanity fosters a sense of belonging and connection.
He stated, “It is essential that we celebrate our diversity, as it is one of our greatest strengths,” and encouraged all Fijians to prioritize their identity as compatriots over ethnic divisions. Leung urged attendees to reflect on their shared experiences and connections, reinforcing that the collective desire for unity is paramount.
Similar views were expressed by other leaders, such as Pio Tikoduadua, the Minister for Home Affairs, who emphasized the shared identity of all citizens as “Fijians” during recent workshops designed to promote social cohesion. Tikoduadua highlighted the necessity of mutual respect and the importance of addressing ethnic divisions, indicating that understanding and embracing diversity are critical for building a stronger nation.
These discussions represent a collective effort in Fiji’s ongoing journey towards racial harmony, focusing on collaboration to create an inclusive society where everyone is valued and respected. Such proactive initiatives foster a positive outlook for a future where all Fijians can thrive together, irrespective of their diverse backgrounds.
