The Leader of the Social Democratic Liberal Party and Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, has expressed deep sorrow and condemnation in response to the recent act of sacrilege at the Samabula Shiv Mandir in Suva. This incident, which involved the desecration of sacred spaces, has raised significant concerns regarding respect for religious practices in Fiji.
Radrodro labeled this act not only as a breach of the law but also as an attack on the constitutional and universal rights that allow individuals to practice their faith freely. He emphasized that Fiji, a nation diverse in beliefs, must not allow such divisive acts to threaten its peace. “In a world already so divided, we cannot afford insane acts like this to threaten our peace in Fiji,” Radrodro stated. He noted that all major religions—including Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Buddhism—advocate for love, tolerance, and unity, principles essential for peaceful coexistence.
This condemnation echoes sentiments shared by other political leaders and communities throughout Fiji. For instance, Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu also condemned the desecration as an affront to the core values of respect and unity that define the Fijian identity. He, along with other officials, has called for urgent action from authorities to address such incidents promptly, reinforcing the need for protective measures for places of worship.
The recent spate of vandalism, including the tearing of sacred texts and damage to religious sites, has sparked widespread outrage and calls for dialogue among different faith communities. Leaders in Fiji believe these distressing events could catalyze vital discussions aimed at fostering understanding and mutual respect among various religious groups. As such, community leaders are hopeful that these challenges can serve as opportunities for unity, ultimately steering Fiji toward a future marked by peace and harmony.
Radrodro extended his thoughts and prayers to those directly affected by the vandalism at the Samabula Shiv Mandir, urging compassion and solidarity in the face of such adversities. His message is one of hope, emphasizing a collective aspiration for healing and harmony within Fiji’s diverse community.
