Fiji’s Call for Positive Parenting: Breaking the Cycle of Violence

Children in Fiji are protected under a constitution that guarantees their rights, equality, and dignity, as stated by Mohenesh Singh, the Counsellor and Founder of the Healing Hands Foundation. He highlighted the importance of safeguarding children from violence, exploitation, and abuse, affirming that this is both a moral and legal responsibility detailed in the Child Protection Policy and the Social Welfare Act of 2010.

In response to a troubling video circulating on social media, depicting a father using violence as a means to teach his children numbers, Mr. Singh condemned such actions as shocking and intolerable. “Any form of abuse against children is met with zero tolerance under the law,” he said, emphasizing that children’s learning should not be forced, as each individual develops at their own speed.

Mr. Singh expressed concern over the continued prevalence of a culture where control is asserted through violence. “It is disheartening to see that some still believe inflicting harm is the solution,” he remarked. He further stressed the importance of fostering a positive learning environment in which children feel engaged, comfortable, and supported.

He urged the government to enhance awareness of positive parenting techniques, particularly aimed at young parents. Just as individuals take assessments to become better drivers, Mr. Singh proposed that parents undergo family life training and positive parenting programs to improve their skills.

“Parenting demands great patience and dedication,” he noted. “While it may be simple to bring a child into the world, nurturing them requires significant love and effort. We must stop hurting them.”

He recommended alternative, child-friendly teaching approaches—like incorporating number songs, sand writing, and games—as effective methods to promote better learning experiences. The Healing Hands Foundation continues to support government initiatives that advocate for positive parenting and child counseling.

“We need to cultivate critical thinkers, which can only be achieved in safe, supportive, and child-friendly environments,” Mr. Singh concluded.

This call for action not only highlights the pressing need for improved parenting practices but also inspires hope for a future where children can thrive in a nurturing and protective environment. It showcases the possibility of fostering positive change through education and awareness.
