Children in Fiji benefit from a constitution that emphasizes their rights, equality, and dignity, according to Mohenesh Singh, Counsellor and Founder of the Healing Hands Foundation. He underlines that safeguarding children from violence, exploitation, and abuse is not merely a moral responsibility—it is also a legal requirement based on the Child Protection Policy and the Social Welfare Act of 2010.
In light of a recent disturbing social media video where a father subjected his children to violence while attempting to teach them numbers, Mr. Singh expressed his outrage, labeling such acts as shocking and intolerable. He affirmed that any form of child abuse is strictly prohibited by law and emphasized that learning should never be enforced through violence. “Every child develops at their own pace and learns according to their individual abilities,” he added.
Mr. Singh lamented the ongoing cultural mindset that resorts to violence for control, commenting on the sadness of seeing individuals who believe that inflicting harm is a valid approach to discipline. He highlighted the necessity of fostering a nurturing educational atmosphere, where children feel included, secure, and supported, allowing them to thrive.
He called on the government to heighten awareness around positive parenting skills, especially aimed at young parents. Drawing parallels with driving license training, Mr. Singh proposed that young couples undergo family life training and positive parenting programs. “Parenting requires immense patience and commitment,” he noted, advocating for love and care over harsh treatment.
To enhance learning experiences, he recommended child-friendly teaching methods, such as using songs, sand writing, and games. The Healing Hands Foundation remains dedicated to backing governmental efforts that promote positive parenting and child counseling. “To cultivate critical thinkers, we must establish safe, supportive, and child-friendly environments,” Mr. Singh concluded.
In summary, Mr. Singh’s message serves as a crucial reminder that both society and individuals hold a responsibility to nurture and protect children, creating environments where they can flourish both mentally and emotionally. This vision not only aligns with legal standards but deeply resonates with the moral fabric of communities wishing to raise well-rounded and capable future generations.
