The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission has expressed strong support for LGBTQIA+ individuals, civil society organizations, and human rights defenders as Fiji commemorates the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT) on May 17, 2025. This year’s global theme, “The Power of Communities,” highlights the essential roles played by grassroots organizations, activists, and allies in promoting inclusion and equality.

Human Rights director Loukinikini Lewaravu emphasized that protecting LGBTQIA+ rights requires collective action from various segments of society, including government institutions, community leaders, families, and close networks. She noted that while constitutional protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity exist, many individuals continue to face abuse and exclusion in their daily lives.

Lewaravu pointed out that Section 26(3)(a) of the Constitution of Fiji explicitly prohibits unfair discrimination, stressing that these rights are binding and should be reflected in everyday life for all citizens. The Commission called for a collective evaluation of societal norms and actions to foster an environment of safety and dignity for every individual.

This message aligns with previous efforts by the Commission highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by marginalized groups in Fiji. Advocacy for systemic change remains crucial as human rights defenders rally for justice and inclusion, aiming to create a community where all individuals—regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity—can live without fear of discrimination or violence.

Overall, the spirit of solidarity and action depicted by the Commission signifies a hopeful vision for the future of LGBTQIA+ rights in Fiji. By engaging all sections of society, there is a potential for meaningful change and a commitment to embracing diversity, ultimately cultivating a more inclusive and respectful society.
