Light of Life Recovery Fiji is calling on the government to allocate funds for drug recovery programs in the upcoming national budget. Programs Coordinator Lusi Tokavakarua expressed concern that current initiatives primarily emphasize awareness, failing to provide adequate support for individuals already struggling with addiction.
Tokavakarua advocates for a structured approach to recovery that moves beyond mere prevention. “If the government can also look into these types of support services, it could make a real difference in the lives of our young people who are struggling with addiction,” she stated. To further assist those facing addiction, Light of Life Recovery Fiji has launched a website to create a safe space for sharing personal struggles and emphasizes that similar national-level support services should be developed.
This sentiment for enhanced recovery support aligns with recent governmental initiatives highlighted by Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa. During a festival opening, Nalumisa pressed the need for businesses to invest in rehabilitation centers while offering incentives including tax holidays and deductions for contributions toward rehabilitation initiatives. He emphasized that a collaborative effort is vital in addressing the growing drug addiction crisis affecting Fiji’s youth and stressed the importance of structured rehabilitation alongside prevention efforts.
The urgent call for more recovery options can also be supported by ongoing discussions in the community regarding the establishment of fully operational drug rehabilitation centers. As the national dialogue grows louder on the need for effective support systems, both local organizations and government bodies seem to share a hopeful vision for creating a healthier future for Fiji’s youth.
The potential for these developments presents a path towards meaningful change in the lives of many, showing that when communities unite for a common cause, progress can be achieved in battling the challenges posed by addiction. Investing in robust rehabilitation programs can pave the way for renewed lives and a healthier society overall, reinforcing the understanding that recovery is possible with the right support.
