The Fijian Cabinet has reached a consensus to modify the 2002 Passport Act, enabling the issuance of Official Passports to qualified senior officials exclusively for their official duties and only for the duration of their appointments.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced this significant decision, explaining that the Official Passport is one of four types of passports provided by the Fiji Immigration Department and is primarily designated for disciplined forces on peacekeeping missions. The other three categories of passports include Ordinary Passports, Diplomatic Passports, and Emergency Passports.
The Prime Minister also indicated that these proposed amendments to the Passport Act will be reviewed again by the Cabinet for further consideration.
This change represents a strategic initiative to ensure that official travel for senior officials is streamlined and appropriately managed, potentially enhancing the efficiency of governmental operations. The focus on official duties and peacekeeping underscores Fiji’s commitment to international cooperation and peacebuilding efforts globally.
The ongoing review process by the Cabinet reflects a commitment to careful governance and the implementation of policies that align with national interests. Overall, these amendments may pave the way for improved administrative functions and demonstrate Fiji’s readiness to adapt to the needs of its officials in a dynamic global environment.
