Opposition Member of Parliament Premila Kumar has strongly criticized Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka following the appointment of three new Ministers and four Assistant Ministers, calling the move a “sham.” In her remarks to FijiLive, Kumar expressed serious disappointment, asserting that instead of rectifying inefficiencies within his existing cabinet, Rabuka has intensified the size of the government. She views this expansion as a protective measure for underperforming officials who enjoy the benefits of their positions at the expense of dedicated Fijians.

With this additional cabinet reshuffle, the total number of ministers and assistant ministers has surged to 34, consisting of 22 Cabinet Ministers and 12 Assistant Ministers, marking one of the largest cabinets in Fiji’s history. Kumar emphasized that this decision contradicts prior commitments made by both Rabuka and Deputy Prime Minister regarding reducing government size and trimming unnecessary expenditures, especially amidst significant economic challenges confronting the citizens.

Kumar remarked, “If the current ministers and assistant ministers were delivering results, why expand the cabinet? The answer is clear: they aren’t.” She argues that the new, unbudgeted positions threaten to divert resources away from critical development projects, placing further strain on public services already facing rising costs.

Former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry echoed Kumar’s sentiments, labeling the cabinet expansion as “irresponsible” and warning of the financial burden it adds to taxpayers already struggling with elevated living costs and declining public services.
