Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has indicated that the Fijian Government is contemplating the reintroduction of cash payments for bus fares, alongside the existing e-ticketing system. This response comes after concerns were raised by Edward Blakelock from Pacific Harbour, who pointed out the impracticalities of relying solely on e-ticketing without addressing significant challenges that many commuters face.

In his communication featured in The Fiji Times’ column ‘A Conversation with the PM’, Rabuka acknowledged the necessity for a more comprehensive approach to public transport payment options. He assured that efforts are being made to resolve ongoing issues with the e-ticketing system, emphasizing that the government is committed to supporting Fijians who rely on bus services for their daily commutes.

Notably, this move towards reintroducing cash payments aligns with past discussions around the e-ticketing system, initially designed to prevent cash handling risks while enhancing safety for drivers. While cashless systems seek to reduce the potential for theft and ensure better tracking of ticketing revenue, the realities of accessibility for all users must be a priority. Rabuka remarked, “I want to assure the public that we recognize the need for improvement in our digital approach, which is still a work in progress.”

Furthermore, the Prime Minister highlighted additional measures, such as engaging both Vodafone Fiji and Digicel Fiji to enhance payment options including offline top-ups, QR Pay, and M-PAiSA, aimed at safeguarding drivers and ensuring passengers have more reliable means of payment.

The Ministry dealing with Trade, MSMEs, Cooperatives, and Communications is taking proactive steps to ensure that improvements focus on those most impacted by public transportation issues, ensuring that the system is efficient, fair, and accessible for everyone.

The concerted efforts from both the government and telecommunications providers reflect a dedication to respond to user concerns and improve the overall public transport experience in Fiji. Collaboration among different stakeholders may pave the way for substantial advancements that ultimately create a more user-friendly, reliable, and efficient transportation environment for the community.

In light of current developments and the government’s willingness to adapt, there is hopeful optimism that public transport in Fiji will evolve to meet the diverse needs of its citizens.
