Fiji’s Bulikula secure historic first World Cup berth in women’s rugby league

An emotional Joe Dakuitoga expressed that the Fiji women’s rugby league team, Bulikula, achieving qualification for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup signifies much more than just a milestone for women’s rugby in Fiji—it represents a major advancement for female sports as a whole. Fiji secured their spot in the upcoming prestigious tournament by defeating Nigeria 62-4 in the final of the International Rugby League Women’s World Series at Terry Fox Stadium in Brampton, Ontario.

This remarkable achievement marks the first time the Bulikula has qualified for a World Cup, and Dakuitoga reflected on the dedication and hard work that has gone into their development programs since their inception in 2019. “It has been a journey for the past few years,” he said, visibly moved. “Qualifying for the World Cup is a big boost for the sport of women’s rugby league in Fiji, and I think all over the world.”

The team’s successful performance in Canada was made even more impressive considering they were missing key players, including NRLW stars. Despite these setbacks, the squad showcased resilience, overpowering Canada 48-0 in the semifinals and displaying solid defense throughout the final match against Nigeria, conceding only one try in the first half.

Captain Cass Staples, who plays for the Sharks and scored four tries in the final, hailed the growing interest and participation in women’s rugby within Fiji. She commended the strength of Nigeria, acknowledging the physical challenge they presented during the match and expressed excitement for the growth of rugby league in that nation as well.

Fiji will now join established rugby nations, including Australia, New Zealand, England, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, France, and Wales, in the upcoming World Cup. The journey of the Bulikula not only symbolizes their achievement but also serves as an inspiring story for future generations of female athletes, promoting gender equality and encouraging young girls in sports.

As the Bulikula prepares for this historic event, their success reflects a dedicated effort towards bolstering women’s sports in Fiji, and the team’s journey will hopefully inspire more female athletes to pursue their dreams in competitive sports. The Bulikula’s qualification is not just a victory on the field; it carries the promise of greater recognition and opportunities for women in sports across the region and beyond.
