The upcoming national budgets for 2025 and 2026 will prioritize education to establish a robust and sustainable foundation for Fiji’s future, as highlighted by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, during a national budget consultation at the University of the South Pacific.

Students expressed their concerns regarding job prospects, digital access, and funding for higher education. In response, Professor Prasad assured them that their feedback would play a crucial role in shaping a budget that is inclusive and tailored to the needs of the people. He confirmed that funding will be allocated to all registered tertiary institutions under the Higher Education Commission, emphasizing the importance of graduate quality and technical training.

Concerns voiced by students included the necessity for increased research funding, assistance with the cost of living, and additional scholarships. Student Masilina Tuiloa pointed out the effectiveness of past measures, such as tax returns and cost of living adjustments, and urged the government to consider reinstating similar support mechanisms to alleviate pressures on households. In agreement, fellow student Navi Tuivuniwa proposed creating a framework that would utilize student research recommendations effectively.

Professor Prasad reiterated the government’s commitment to support the educational sector and highlighted that budget allocations for higher education will be carefully evaluated to ensure their effectiveness. The emphasis on education aligns with the government’s broader strategy to foster long-term economic growth and address challenges such as rising living costs and poverty, by prioritizing education and vocational training.

This initiative demonstrates the government’s dedication to responding to the educational needs of the population, particularly as the world evolves and requires a skilled workforce. Engaging with students during consultations illustrates a proactive approach to governance where community input is valued, fostering a sense of hope for a brighter future.

In recent discussions on previous budgets, Professor Prasad stated that the government is not structuring its financial plans for electoral gain, but rather aims to foster long-term development and stability. He stressed the importance of sustainable policies and the need for community involvement in shaping future budgets. This consistent focus on inclusiveness and accessibility in education could lead to significant advancements in the country’s socio-economic landscape, ultimately ensuring that more students thrive in their academic pursuits and prepare for successful futures.
