The Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS) is urging the Fijian Government to prioritize community-centric needs in the upcoming National Budget, advocating for a shift from political spending to practical and impactful investments for the people. FCOSS Executive Director, Vani Catanasiga, highlighted the importance of allocating resources towards community monitoring of government projects, improved infrastructure in informal settlements, and initiatives addressing climate change.

Catanasiga emphasized that while some funding already reaches rural areas, the effectiveness of these investments is hampered by a lack of implementation capabilities. She stated, “It’s not about raising salaries; it’s about retraining the civil service to deliver.” A clear adherence to the national development plan is essential, she believes, ensuring that the Government remains focused on fulfilling the needs of ordinary citizens rather than being distracted by political gains.

Catanasiga also called for a review of parliamentarians’ salary increases and the establishment of new ministries, suggesting that the funds allocated for these expenses could significantly contribute to welfare programs and the development of essential infrastructure, such as better roads, benefiting the populace directly.

This call aligns with previous sentiments expressed by various community organizations, emphasizing that pressing social and economic issues like healthcare access and poverty alleviation remain unaddressed in the face of political distractions. The prior discussions highlighted the need for collective input from citizens to shape a budget that genuinely reflects the needs of the people.

In a hopeful outlook, as Fiji prepares to announce its 2025-2026 budget on June 27, there is optimism that incorporating community feedback into the budgetary process could lead to a governance model that fosters inclusivity and responsiveness. This collaborative engagement is essential for building a more equitable future for all Fijians and addressing the fundamental challenges they face.

The continued dialogue among civil society, including calls for action from organizations like the Coalition on Human Rights Fiji and the NGO Coalition, reinforces the need for a government focused on tackling the everyday struggles of its citizens. With a unified purpose, the hope is that Fijians will witness observable progress that uplifts the standard of living across communities in Fiji.
