The Fijian Government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have formalized a Loan and Grant Agreement aimed at enhancing Fiji’s transportation infrastructure through the Critical Bridges Project. The signing ceremony took place at the Ministry of Finance in Suva and was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad, ADB Pacific Regional Director Aaron Battern, and Fiji Roads Authority acting CEO Apisai Ketenilagi.
This ambitious project has a total financing cost of $US134.5 million (approximately $F307.7 million), which includes a concessional loan of $US120 million ($F274.5 million) and a grant of $US14.5 million ($F33.2 million). Professor Prasad highlighted that this initiative is part of the initial National Development Plan launched in September of this year, which outlines infrastructure development priorities for the next five years.
The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) will oversee implementation, having identified four key bridges that urgently require replacement: the Lami bridge at Suvavou, Medraukutu bridge near the Lami Cement Factory, Sabeto bridge at the Sabeto River, and Viseisei bridge connecting Nadi and Lautoka. Professor Prasad noted that this agreement represents the first infrastructure sector financing from the ADB to the Fijian Government on concessional terms.
Additionally, Mr. Ketenilagi emphasized the importance of a comprehensive approach to the project, incorporating the effects of climate change into the planning process. The construction of the new bridges aims to enhance climate-resilient transportation infrastructure while minimizing long-term disruptions. The project is set to commence next year, with a completion timeline of three years.
This initiative not only addresses the immediate need for infrastructure improvements but also signifies a collaborative effort towards sustainable development in Fiji. The focus on climate resilience is particularly encouraging, as it aligns with global priorities for adapting infrastructure to withstand environmental challenges.
In summary, the Fiji Critical Bridges Project represents a significant step forward for the country’s infrastructure and environment, fostering improved connectivity while being mindful of future climate impacts. With the backing of the ADB, Fiji is poised for a transformative phase in its transportation landscape.
