A team from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces has been deployed to assist in recovery efforts following a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake that impacted Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, last week.
During a briefing with the soldiers, Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, underscored the critical role the team will play in aiding the recovery of the earthquake’s victims. He emphasized the need for immediate support to restore the lives of over 100,000 individuals affected by the disaster.
Ditoka mentioned the advance team’s objective to deliver prompt assistance to facilitate recovery. He conveyed that while they may remain on-site for an extended duration, their skills and experiences will be invaluable during the mission. “Help your fellow brothers and sisters in this time of need,” he encouraged the personnel.
Furthermore, the Minister advised the soldiers to brace themselves for the possibility of a longer deployment, given the unpredictable nature of the situation. “I am not sure how this is going to pan out… be prepared for that,” he stated, acknowledging that the conditions could result in their extended stay.
Earlier in the week, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka noted that Vanuatu faces significant challenges, particularly in light of aftershocks and the impending threat of a cyclone in the region.
This deployment represents a proactive step towards recovery, showcasing the spirit of solidarity and regional support in times of crisis. With the dedication of the military personnel and the assurance of continued aid, there is hope for the affected communities to rebuild and recover from this devastating event.
