The Fijian Government has announced an ambitious plan to enhance its Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) capabilities by developing a significant new infrastructure project in Nasinu. This project, envisioned as a “BPO village” located within the Kalabu Tax Free Zone, aims to create a comprehensive digital ecosystem designed to attract international investors through high-speed internet and lifestyle amenities.
During discussions with Joseva Wivou, the executive director of Outsource Fiji, Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica highlighted this initiative as a cornerstone of Fiji’s strategy to position itself as a leading digital outsourcing hub in the Pacific region. He underscored that this development not only focuses on physical infrastructure but also aims to cultivate a future-ready digital environment.
Currently, Fiji hosts around eight active BPO operators, with ambitions to significantly increase this number in the coming years. The government is committed to supporting the BPO sector, which is seen as crucial for employment generation and aligns with Fiji’s National Digital Strategy. Kamikamica stated that the growth of this industry represents one of Fiji’s most promising avenues for innovation and job creation, particularly for youth entering the workforce.
Recent observations note a surge in market activity, with several new BPO entrants emerging recently. The Fijian outsourcing sector is gaining traction, backed by its competitive cost structure, a highly skilled English-speaking workforce, and cultural compatibility with global markets. Positive developments, including improved connectivity options like the upcoming Google link, are expected to bolster this expansion further, empowering local women who represent a significant portion of the workforce in this field.
The broader outlook for Fiji’s BPO industry remains optimistic. Collaborative efforts between government and industry stakeholders show promise for job creation and economic diversification, establishing the country as a pivotal player in the global outsourcing market while laying down sustainable and inclusive growth pathways.
With these initiatives, Fiji’s vision of evolving into a billion-dollar BPO industry is beginning to take shape, suggesting a vibrant economic future filled with opportunities for local talent and international partnerships.
