The Fiji Amateur Boxing team is intensifying its preparations for the Elite Men’s and Women’s World Championships scheduled to take place in Liverpool, England from September 1-14. Having recently experienced success at the Queensland International Open Golden Gloves tournament, where the team clinched two gold and three silver medals, they are looking forward to this upcoming challenge.

Head coach Cam Todd expressed pride in the athletes’ efforts at the Australian Golden Gloves tournament, noting that it was a significant event featuring over 450 boxers from Australia, New Zealand, and other countries. Todd emphasized the high level of competition and its importance for the development of Fiji’s senior boxers, particularly as they aim to represent their nation in the Commonwealth Games.

“Competitions like this are pivotal; they form part of our boxers’ pathway to the Commonwealth,” said Todd. He aims to select a team of approximately 10 competitors to showcase their talent on the global stage. Training for the World Championships is already underway, with the athletes focusing on enhancing their skills, particularly in footwork and timing, essential elements for success in the ring.

The dedication to training and competitions reflects a commitment to nurturing local talent and includes initiatives to engage junior and youth boxers. This focus is indicative of a broader positive trend in Fiji’s boxing scene, which is characterized by rising grassroots involvement and increased female participation, signaling inclusivity in the sport.

With the groundwork being laid and ongoing support from the community, there is optimism surrounding Fiji’s boxing prospects as the team sets their sights on Liverpool. The experience gained from recent competitions will undoubtedly contribute to their readiness, and there is excitement about the potential accomplishments awaiting them in the international arena.

Overall, the commitment to training and competitive exposure is anticipated to yield promising outcomes for Fijian boxers, enhancing the future of the sport and inspiring the next generation of athletes.
