Fiji’s Amateur Boxing head coach, Cam Todd, is gearing up to select two teams for crucial international competitions this year, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to developing its boxing talent. The first significant event is the Australian Golden Gloves tournament scheduled for July in Brisbane, followed by the prestigious Men’s and Women’s World Championships in England in September.

Coach Todd emphasized the importance of these competitions, likening the World Championships to a unique opportunity for the elite boxers to face formidable challenges. He stated, “It’s a really hard competition because obviously it’s the World Championships, but it gives me the chance to put our elites into deep waters. I am really preparing the elites this year for the Commonwealth Games next year and the Pacific Games in 2027.”

Training sessions are already underway at the Stan Brown Boxing Gym in Suva, where boxers participate in rigorous weekly practices. This initiative aligns with Todd’s ongoing goal of enhancing the technical skills of local athletes, particularly focusing on essential footwork and timing—areas in which he believes Fiji’s boxers can improve.

In conjunction with the preparations for the upcoming competitions, Todd has also been advocating for increased exposure through international bouts. He previously noted that participating in high-caliber events allows boxers to refine their skills and build confidence, a sentiment echoed in earlier reports about the value of international competition.

The excitement surrounding the squad reflects a broader trend within Fiji amateur boxing, characterized by more significant grassroots involvement and rising participation. The increased engagement of young and female boxers is particularly encouraging, showing a dynamic shift towards inclusivity in the sport.

Overall, Fiji’s boxing community appears poised for success on the international stage, with ongoing support and a forward-thinking approach under Todd’s leadership lighting the way for a bright future in the sport. The commitment to youth development and competitive exposure is likely to yield promising results, further enhancing Fiji’s reputation in the boxing arena.
