Local boxer Jasmine Daunakamakama is gearing up to sharpen her skills ahead of significant international tournaments set to take place over the next two years. Recently returning from a tour in the United States with Fiji Amateur Boxing, Daunakamakama is back in the ring, focused on enhancing her aggressiveness and defensive tactics.
“I am working on becoming an aggressive fighter while also focusing on improving my defense. On the mental side, I am learning to trust my abilities and also the advice of my coaches,” she stated.
Daunakamakama made history as the first female fighter from Fiji to compete in an Olympic qualifying event when she participated in the 2024 Paris Olympic qualifiers in Bangkok, Thailand. She has garnered attention for her talents, recently being nominated for the 2024 Fiji Sports Women of the Year due to her contributions to the sport.
The excitement around Daunakamakama reflects a broader trend in Fijian boxing, as highlighted by leading fighters such as Ubayd Haider, who noted the significant growth in both the competitive standard and the emergence of a new generation of female boxers. Haider emphasized that boxers like Daunakamakama possess exceptional skills, demonstrating an amateur style that is commendable even compared to male fighters.
As Daunakamakama continues her training, the future looks bright for women’s boxing in Fiji, with a growing focus not only on enhancing skills but also on increasing participation at all levels. This initiative represents a positive move toward inclusivity and the development of local talent, ensuring the sport’s vibrant future in the country.
The journey of Daunakamakama and her peers illustrates the strength and determination within Fiji’s boxing community, and their ongoing efforts may inspire more young women to pursue boxing, creating a powerful legacy for the sport.
