Keleto Takele from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) emerged victorious in the boxing final of the Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl, claiming the gold medal in the 57–60kg division after defeating his comrade Rusiate Qalo by points at the LICI Court in Suva. Despite Takele’s win, it was the Fiji Police Force that ultimately secured the overall victory in the boxing competition held last night.

Expressing gratitude for his success, Takele said, “I thank God for the win, and we didn’t have an easy preparation for this competition.” He acknowledged the challenges faced during their one-month training camp, which included inadequate nutrition for lighter boxers and rigorous early morning training sessions.

“This win is dedicated to my dad and family members who came to support me, as well as the army officers at camp,” he added. Takele, who is in his first year of boxing, highlighted that this match marked his seventh bout since joining the Army Boxing Club. He shared a bit of his background, mentioning that he resides in Navunikabi, Namosi, but was introduced to the sport by his brother, who is also a trainer and boxer.

Takele emphasized the importance of spiritual preparation, which helped him maintain resilience during tough training periods. He also challenged the misconception that boxers are arrogant, emphasizing the values of discipline, focus, humility, and determination inherent in the sport.

Furthermore, he encouraged young people to consider boxing as a means of self-defense and fitness, showcasing his belief in the positive impact of the sport on individuals and the community.

Summary: Keleto Takele, an RFMF boxer, won gold at the Ratu Sukuna Bowl while discussing the rigorous training process and dedication involved in the sport. He encourages youth involvement in boxing for fitness and self-defense, aiming to reshape perceptions about the discipline and values boxing instills.
