Fiji’s Boxing Scene: Equal Opportunity or Risky Feats?

The Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) ensures that all boxers have the same opportunities to participate in matches, according to BCF chairman Adi Narayan. Speaking at the launch of the Bluewater Boxing Promotion last Thursday at the Holiday Inn in Suva, Narayan emphasized the organization’s commitment to providing chances for all fighters, regardless of their varying levels of experience.

Narayan stated that discrepancies in the number of fights between opponents will not lead to interference from the commission. He noted that, “If a boxer has a record that does not match an opponent, the commission will not object to that.” He highlighted that boxing matches are about competition, not exclusively about championships, inviting all interested boxers to demonstrate their skills.

He specifically mentioned that Robin Hazelman has the opportunity to challenge the current cruiserweight title holder, Alivereti Kauyaca, but only if Hazelman is successful in his match against Joseph Kwadjo. Narayan expressed optimism, stating, “Give him a chance, he might knock him (Kwadjo) out, and we’ll see what happens in the Bluewater boxing promotions on February 22.” This upcoming event, taking place at the Vodafone Arena, will showcase 15 bouts.

This approach by the BCF reflects a positive and inclusive attitude towards boxing in Fiji, encouraging athletes to showcase their talents in an environment where every participant has the opportunity to fight, regardless of their background.

In summary, the BCF’s stance fosters a spirit of competition and fair play, which can inspire upcoming boxers to pursue their dreams and test their skills in the ring.
