Next week, Fiji will host the International Tri Nations Amateur Boxing tournament at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva, an event that promises to showcase the nation’s up-and-coming boxing talent alongside its established champions. Coach Cam Todd has designed a diverse squad that includes both seasoned junior and youth representatives, as well as emerging boxers from various local clubs.

Building on past successes, where Fijian boxers secured an impressive five gold and five silver medals in Tahiti last year, Todd aims to allow newer talents to gain valuable competition experience. “Most of those boxers will be competing, but I also wanted to make sure that it’s not just our number ones. So we’ve got a number of boxers who are coming through from some of the local clubs,” Todd said, emphasizing the importance of introducing fresh faces into the competitive arena.

Clubs that have recently gained recognition, such as those in Nausori and Navua, will feature prominently in the squad, reflecting Fiji’s growing grassroots boxing movement. The Western Division will also contribute significantly to the squad, with boxers hailing from Ba, Nadi, and Lautoka ready to compete.

The event will run from Friday to Saturday, providing local fans an opportunity to witness the skills of their athletes firsthand. International viewers can enjoy the matches live on Viti+ for $99, while local coverage will be available on FBC 2.

This tournament serves as a beacon of hope for the future of Fiji’s amateur boxing scene. It symbolizes not just a celebration of current talent but also a commitment to nurturing the next generation of champions. As community support grows, and with increasing enthusiasm for the sport, Fiji’s boxing prospects are looking more promising than ever.
