Professional boxers James Singh and Junior Binnu have recently been sparring with members of Fiji’s amateur boxing team as they prepare for the International Tri Nations tournament taking place at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva on June 28-29. This collaboration provides a crucial opportunity for the young athletes to face experienced fighters from Australia and Samoa, enhancing their competition readiness.

Fiji’s amateur boxing coach, Cam Todd, expressed the value of these warm-up sessions, emphasizing that they offer important learning experiences for both the amateurs and professional boxers. He noted how the pros have recognized the rising talent among the younger fighters, which has led them to seek additional sparring opportunities: “It’s good for them to see where they are and it’s good for him to get some extra rounds,” Todd remarked about Binnu’s participation in the training.

Additionally, Junior Binnu is gearing up for his own bout against Runqi Zhou at the Vodafone Arena in Suva on July 19, illustrating not only his personal journey but also the interconnectedness of these boxing events in promoting local talent.

The Tri Nations tournament is expected to be a major platform for showcasing Fiji’s burgeoning boxing talent, with twenty teams participating, and it symbolizes a bright future for the sport in the region. This event aims not only to foster local competition but also to encourage community support and build a robust amateur boxing framework.

Fans can catch this exciting event live on FBC 2, making it accessible to those who support Fiji’s boxing aspirations. The continued emphasis on development and international exposure for these young athletes reflects an optimistic outlook on the future of amateur boxing in Fiji.
