Fiji’s amateur boxing scene is witnessing significant advancements as preparations ramp up for two major international competitions, according to head coach Cam Todd. The elite team is gearing up for the USA Boxing International Open in Pueblo, Colorado, while another group of amateur boxers gets ready for the Australian Club Championships in Adelaide, both set to occur in April and May.

Todd expressed satisfaction with the athletes’ progress, noting that they are in excellent shape and nearing their target weights. He emphasized the daily training regimen currently in place, which involves not only intense practice sessions led by him but also continued work with their respective coaches.

The coach highlighted the importance of creating competitive opportunities for the junior and youth teams, stating that he plans to include some of them in upcoming March competitions prior to their international commitments. This initiative aims to ensure they get valuable match experience before heading overseas.

However, Todd identified financial challenges as a significant hurdle in assembling the national teams for these competitions. While the Fiji National Sports Commission provides essential support, additional fundraising efforts are necessary to cover costs such as luggage fees during travel. To aid in these financial efforts, a car-wash fundraiser is scheduled to take place at Kundan Singh in Tamavua.

This article underscores the ongoing growth and development within Fiji’s amateur boxing community, which has seen positive trends, including increased participation and competitive experiences. With continued support and preparation, the prospects for Fijian boxers appear promising, highlighting a commitment to nurturing local talent and achieving success on an international scale.
