Fiji’s Bold Vision for Youth Empowerment in the Pacific

Fiji reaffirmed its commitment to youth development in the Pacific region during the South Pacific Youth Senior Government Officials meeting held in Nadi today. Phillip Hereniko, the Director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the significance of this year’s theme, “Recommitted to Youth Development in the Pacific,” which reflects the belief that the future of the region rests with its young people.

Hereniko stated that Fiji’s Ministry of Youth and Sports has consistently been a leader in youth development initiatives, highlighting that their commitment transcends mere policies and programs; it is a fundamental value embedded in the national agenda.

He outlined several recent initiatives, including the reassessment of youth development policies and laws, the formation of the National Youth Council of Fiji, and the introduction of The Youth Education Sex App designed to educate and inform young people about sexual reproductive health services.

The director expressed his appreciation for the support from UNFPA and UNICEF in these areas and stressed the necessity of inclusivity in youth development, ensuring no young person is overlooked, irrespective of their background, gender, or location.

Hereniko also mentioned the accomplishments of Youth Festivals and symposiums, which have successfully brought together young Fijians from various backgrounds to celebrate diversity and express their aspirations and challenges.

As the meeting progresses, Hereniko reiterated Fiji’s goal to build on the achievements thus far, share experiences, and create innovative strategies that empower the upcoming generation. He highlighted the importance of collaboration, resource sharing, and utilizing the individual strengths of each nation to foster a Pacific region where every young person can achieve their full potential.
